6 – local food

The “scanato” bread is made of wheat flour and bran or whole wheat flour.

It ‘s still worked and baked followig the old , traditional receipt and procedure. It comes from peasant wisdom and it is a bread unique in its simplicity, appealing scents, delicious in taste, never chewy, fragrant and pleasant even after 15 days from the date it is made. It is cooked in wood oven fueled by chestnut, oak and beech strips.

Cerchiara actually has the title of ‘Town of Bread’. There are nine bakeries (on 2000 inhabitants) and all managed by women.

A good restaurant is the “Osteria al Ponte“. It is located near the Carabinieri barracks. You can eat good pizzas, but also good local dishes.

Bar Trattoria Il Solito Posto It’s another good choice to eat tasty pizza or local meat steak.

If you go up towards the Sanctuary, for a couple of kilometres, you will find Locanda della Quercia (+39 338 628 3088) where, in addition to enjoying excellent local cuisine, you will find a magnificent panorama that reaches the sea.

If you want to spend a pleasant after dinner time, sipping anisette, you can sit at “Bar dello Sport” tables, Maria and Vincenzo will serve you with courtesy and you will know the simple but nice, Cerchiara nightlife.

Do you want a good steak? Mario is a talented butcher. His butcher’s shop is located a few meters from the police station. You can grill them in the picnic areas on the way to ‘Our Lady of Arms’ Sanctuary.His ‘capocollo’ is a homemade ,traditional, very good salami.If you like tasty cheese you can try his.

Do you love fruit or vegetables? You’ll find several street vendors.

If you appreciate homemade goat cheese, you can ask Maria at ‘Bar dello Sport’ how to get to her aunt’s farm. On the way to the farm you can admire very nice sights.

Cerchiara has also been home for a good initiative, by Italian chef Francesco Mazzei, dedicated to “No Waste”.

Mazzei, whose London restaurants are famous, brings together, every year, world of gastronomy important personalities and engages them in a popular party devoted to the cooking without waste.
